Baffle filter and mesh filter are the most used filter to remove grease from smoke. Though both have the same function, they differ in the way they remove contamination. In general, the function of filter is to remove contamination from the primary component. Filter collects the dust/grease particle and stores it. Filter can be air filter,water filter,oil filter and so on. Let us see the functioning of baffle filters in case of chimney.
Baffle filters are made of aluminium, stainless steel or mild steel depending on the temperature it is used. Baffle filters are more efficient than mesh filters.
Baffle filter Vs Mesh Filter
Mesh filters have pores that allows air to pass through it. Any particle bigger than the size of the mesh gets stuck in the mesh. Hence mesh filter requires constant cleaning for efficient performance.
Baffle filters divert the direction of the air repeatedly using the baffle plates. The grease particles which are heavier than air cannot change direction as rapidly as air and hence gets settled on the filter. The settled particles are collected on the filter tray. Air first hits the outer plate of the filter. Air changes direction moves towards the path available and pass through the opening. Air hits the inner plate and changes direction again. During this process the grease condenses on the filter plate. The condensed grease drains to the filter tray which has to be cleaned once in six months.
